The Grey Veil
At unspecified times throughout the year, interested Guilders are asked to come forward to participate in the Guilder Games. Participants are matched with opponents of equal level (but not necessarily identical skills). Some may opt to challenge higher level opponents. Higher level opponents can accept or decline a challenge from a lower level Guilder.
All Gamers wear a red sash on their right arm to identify them as participants. Combat does not take place in an organized setting; Gamers are given the names of their opponents and left to their own devices to seek out and confront them. Thus, combat can take place anywhere, at any time. Victors are given purses of money or, in the case of exceptional performance, a magic item or service.
Encounters are non-lethal, for subdual or incapacitation, although thrill-seeking Gamers occasionally opt for combat to the death. In this case, they are matched with a Guilder with like interest.
Guilder Games are held as a competition every year; winner gets an honorary position as the Rex of the guilds; while not actually a ruler, this position has influence behind the scenes.
